Making a House
a Home
Series: Article
#1 (cooking)
by Lynn Green
Well, December 31, 2007 will mark my second wedding
anniversary. I'm still basking in year #1 right now though!
We've accomplished quite a bit in one year. First, we had a
huge addition put on our home because I have lived here for eight
years now---long before meeting my husband. And when we discussed
marriage, I knew I loved my home and neighborhood enough that I
did not want to move. So after marrying, we hired contractors and
it looks like a brand new place now. Because I wanted it to look
like "our" home instead of "my" home, I even
had the front door changed. Since the addition was put on by
"us", I now view it as "our" home!
To those of you who also are newlyweds, I have to tell you the
truth. My biggest challenge has been in the kitchen. Don't
misunderstand what I'm saying. I can cook. My husband loves my
food. I even enjoy cooking.
For me, it's the get up-and-go of it. When I was
unmarried, I did not have to cook because I lived here alone and
only had myself to think about. At any given time I could
simply run to a local restaurant to eat or I could pop open a can
of soup, or just nibble on a snack for "dinner".
As soon as I married, we started having the addition put on
this house so to be honest with you, I had no kitchen for an
entire year! My husband and I would order food, eat out
regularly, or eat on the go.
I promised my husband that once our new (gigantic!) kitchen was
finished, I would cook dinner regularly because there would be no
reason not to. I must say that I'm getting there. Old habits
are hard to break and cooking regularly is new for me. Presently
I'm doing pretty good. I cook dinner about three times per week
(every other day and we have leftovers). My goal is to cook
about five nights per week. It makes me feel so good to see my
husband initiating warming up the dinner and saying---as he did
this evening, Dinner last night was good. Now that the
seasonings settled in over night, it should be even better now!
I'm keeping a promise that I made to myself when I was
single. We received a TON of wedding gifts and we got some
beautiful china. We actually use the good china. Yes, we use
our good china. As much as it costs, why allow it to sit and waste
away, waiting for special celebrations?
I'm enjoying creating my own recipes and experimenting with
recipes. In fact, if you have any favorites, please mail
them in to me and I'll publish them!
Newlyweds, please email me and let me know how your marriage is
working out. I took TWO years off from this website to devote to
dating my husband, planning my wedding and marrying---and getting
rest and peace.
I'm back now and would love to hear your happy stories,
recipes, anecdotes, etc. In article #2 of this series, I
will either post the recipes women send in or I'll write about
decorating the home. Whatever the Lord leads.
God bless and I hope to hear from the married ladies soon!
